We found that when people saw coverage of COVID-19 accompanied by a picture of a beach, they placed beaches higher on their list of risky venues. Never mind that the text of the articles either didn’t mention indoor-versus-outdoor risk or explicitly noted that outdoor environments (such as beaches) have lower risk than indoor ones (such as restaurants). Furthermore, the proportion of readers who incorrectly believed that beaches are riskier than restaurants was about six percentage points higher when an article about the pandemic was accompanied by a beach picture.
Finally people are on to the stupid beach thing.I have long maintained that the only reason beaches were closed is because that is the easiest place for some masked Cassandra reporter to get distant crowd shots that look like people are stacked on top of each other partying away without a care, or dramatic empty strands to convey The Seriousness with which we are all taking this. Local weather guys are awesome. The great one in Detroit when I was a kid was Sonny Eliot. He was born Marvin Schlossberg but became Sonny Eliot when his B-24 was shot down over Germany and he became a POW - probably not a bad move. He would make all kinds of stupid jokes and would combine two aspects of weather for his forecast. Cloudy and Chilly would mean Clilly forecast.
