I’m saying you’re wrong about [prayer]

I respect your beliefs. And I should not be downing you for having them.

I think you can tell I have a checkered history with the church, and those who call themselves Christian.

I take back my disrespect toward your faith.

Its not my place to do that.

Aren’t there similar rituals in Satanism or any religion for that matter?

Yes.

Is it all bullshit to you?

No.

Church establishments are the fast food of genuine self discover[y], Azz.

What do you think of self-help books?

No worries. My religion is strong enough to handle it and frankly practically invented logical debate (after the Greeks, of course  ;)).

How do you know what other people got out of the experience?

I just felt, at the time, that everyone was pretending.

You’re just superimposing your own experience there.

You make a fair point there. Touché.

I'm sure it is.

I made the mistake of projecting all my own, personal issues with one of the largest legs of organised religion onto you.

One thing I will say, however, is: how do you square up being a troll and a true Christian?

Surely those 2 aspects of your personality are at odds.

I guess my whole thing is, if one is going to call oneself a Christian, one should uphold all of the ideals of what being a Christian is all the time.

I'm just disillusioned with the type of individual that is a terrible example of being a Christian, walkin' around with the attitude that they can go to confession, or be a bad person, and because Jesus died for them, they feel as if they're redeemed-- irrespective of whatever it is they do by way of sin.

So, I got to the point (personally) where I realised, I'm a pretty shitty person. I don't have the right to call myself a Christian, as sin is so baked in to everything I do in life.

And that's why I gave up on the whole idea.

I will admit that prayer is weird and I had and sometimes still have similar feelings about it as you, Azz. It’s really only been in the last several years that I’ve explored it further and given it more of a chance but for a long time I felt very self-conscious about it and often kinda stupid. And there are still a lot of things about Christianity and things Jesus said that I still struggle with. For example, right in the beginning in Matthew when Jesus is starting his ministry and travelling throughout the land, preaching and healing and gathering followers a guy comes up to him and essentially says, “Hey, Jesus, I’ve been witnessing your ministry and I want to follow you but can you help me bury my father who just passed away first? And Jesus responds by telling him to let the dead bury the dead and just come follow him. Well, that has always just seemed like a douchey thing to say to someone whose father just died but maybe he was trying to say that he’s not really dead anyway, I don’t know but it’s always and still seems like an insensitive and tactless thing to have said to that man. I also struggle with the concept of grace vs. good works but that’s a much larger issue.

I don’t find that. Where do you see conflict?

Well, this is where the aspect of grace comes in. As hard as we may try to be perfectly virtuous we aren’t God and so will likely never practically achieve that. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t strive for it but we have to forgive ourselves and others for our shortcomings in that regard.

Dubious indeed.

LOL "I knew his father; kid seems bright."  Imagine being a middle-aged schlub and trading on a reference your dad got for you.
