Great Colonel. Now aside from tearing off my 50 year old leaking galvanized eaves trough and replacing it this year- what are your recommendations? I'm looking at replacing the continuous gutters with some of the sections because I cannot just get somebody to show up and make the gutter and leave me to install it. I suppose I will also be "upgrading" from the 4 inch to 5 inch gutter.
I do not know how gutters work in Colonel Manly's thymelein/parallel universe, but from reading the above I gather you have what are called (I believe) "box gutters," "integral gutters" or "Yankee gutters?"
Look at these:

If that is the situation you are dealing with the pictures below are one way of dealing with that:

If that is the case, due to the way shingles are installed you might think about going ahead and getting a new roof while you are at it. As the first course of shingles is at the drip-edge of the roof and you work your way up to the peak. You CAN just install however many courses of shingles required to cover that new bit of roof extension that will cover your old "trough gutter" but I would recommend against that as you very well will damage that last course of old shingle that the new ones will have to "slide" under. That is a recipe for future leakages which will lead to the fascia the new gutter is attached to rotting out again.
If you have the above gutter situation, I would recommend just getting a new roof: most (but not all) roofers are happy to throw in a new gutter for a small fee. If you go that route, INSIST that they use gutter screws and not nails. Screws are the hot new gutter mounting technology, welcome to the 21st century.
Since I happen to be a bit Old Fashioned, personally were it MY abode I would go with these:

Which, again due to my personal taste and sense of humor; I think would be hilarious to have on a Victorian, Colonial and/or 1920s "Kit House" (like mine):

In fact, those log gutters would look hilarious on just about ANY style house that is NOT a log cabin. I (and I believe Colonel Pate as well) would recommend that for obvious style reasons. Plus, all you need to make the log gutters is a chainsaw, an adze, thyme and "man sweat."
K_Dubb, Attend:Although my choice of log guttering for domiciles may seem unorthodox stylistically, is it not truly
patian? I think you as well should consider "log gutters" for your house. Very probably, only you and WOTR would be the proud owners of such a unique guttering solution for your particular styles of house.
Since the two of you are widely separated geographically, no one could possibly call either of you "copy-cats" unless they find this post, in this thread on this site.
Also, K_Dubb, I am considering running for President of the One World Government as well as POTUS 2024; I have yet to determine when that particular election (if any) is to be held, but I think we have a very strong platform for that High Office as well. Can I count on you to also run (shirtless) with me in our bid for World Presidency?
I think, with BOTH of those Executive hats on our heads the formalization and normalization of the People's Free Democratic Republic of pate is virtually assured!
