3. What is Democracy?

Democracy is a system of government where power ultimately rests with the people. It comes from the Greek words demos (people) and kratos (power or rule)—so it literally means “rule by the people.”

Here are the key features of a democracy:

Free and Fair Elections – Citizens vote to choose their leaders and representatives.
Majority Rule with Minority Rights – Decisions are made by majority, but the rights of individuals and minority groups are protected.
Rule of Law – Everyone, including leaders, is subject to the law.
Separation of Powers – Different branches of government (executive, legislative, judiciary) keep each other in check.
Freedom of Expression – People can speak, write, protest, and share ideas without fear of punishment.
Political Pluralism – Multiple political parties and viewpoints are allowed to compete and exist.
Citizen Participation – People are encouraged to take part in public life, through voting, activism, community involvement, etc.

In essence, democracy is about giving people a voice in how they're governed. It can take many forms (like direct democracy vs. representative democracy), but the core idea is the same: the people hold the power.
