American Graffiti (1973)

George Lucas’ second movie. Even though it takes place in the early 60s it single-handedly created the 50s nostalgia craze of the early 70s and would be the basis of the TV show Happy Days, which even used the same opening song and some of the same actors. This low budget, high gross film gave Lucas the time, money and clout to spend the next 4 years developing his next project.

Before Halloween, before Assault on Precinct 13 and of course before Alien, there was DARK STAR.

George Lucas’ first movie based on his film school final project. A cautionary tale of a dystopian future.

The song 'Mr. Self Destruct' off Nine Inch Nails' album 'The Downward Spiral' begins with a sample from the film THX 1138.

Star Wars (1977) The Original Theatrical Release with no digital enhancements

Lucas’ third movie that would go on to become the world-changing, blockbuster behemoth we all know, love and hate. Not a bad run for a guy’s first three movies. However, this would be the last movie he would direct for 20 years, until he started on the second Star Wars trilogy. He did write and executive produce for a bunch of movies in that time though. This one is still my favorite of the bunch because of it’s purity. Lucas was banking on but still wasn’t sure about the toy selling formula that would set the pattern for all future movies so it never descends into a dumbed down, cynical pitch to sell toys to kids like some of his future efforts (Hello, Jar Jar!). Instead what you get is someone trying to throw all his best film school ideas and his love of Japanese samurai cinema into a special effects intensive sci-fi space opera. It still holds up all these years later.

Oh, and it’s a cautionary tale of a dystopian future a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.  ;)

"Always hold the high ground."
"Where does C-3PO get that paint?"
"Just close your eyes and swing, Kid; you're the key bloodline in a crux event involving multiple convergent hyper-dimensional realities, and you're gonna make it. Somehow. I don't care how. Here, put this bucket on your head and go stand in the corner: it's dangerous to stand next to you. Go stand over there. GO STAND ALONE & SWING. I'm gonna sit here and get blasted with Chewbacca. Go on, no, I don't have to train you. I don't need to train you. You're gonna go on a suicide mission against impossible odds and somehow end up surviving. I don't care about your friends, Water Farmer. You don't have any friends, and any poor saps anywhere near you and all your family are all gonna die by the end of it all anyway. Shaka, when the walls fell. They're even gonna blow up your droid, Kid. They'll slam it into a wall or something. Trust Me--I'm a Jedi Master, Kiddo, just shut the fuck up and listen: I'm gonna sit over here with the Wookie."

Yeah. We're gonna play Chess. Just keep that bucket on your head, Kid-O. GO AWAY."

I should probably get that blood test done in eight hours after I finish all this boxed wine.
