I don't know if anybody had been following the supreme court case that would have allowed police to enter your house and conduct warrant less searches and take your guns if they claimed that they were doing "community caretaking functions" instead of "police work." Anyhow, it was unanimously tossed today.

Yes, if I remember right those community-caretaking functions were most recently cited in the news to justify police breaking up Orthodox Jewish dance parties in NY.  Will be interesting to see if that holds up, too.

My (limited) understanding is that they exist due to a 1070's supreme court ruling around something with a automobile search. It was only when they expanded them to include a house (a man's castle?) that it became an issue that they revisited. I don't have a clue where dance parties fall in this case.
