Title: The Man Thread

Walks speaking of destroyer gray you probably saw this already but this guy makes an interesting point I never heard before about why Navy ships are still painted gray when visual camouflage isn't a thing any more, in the context of discussing the profligate decoration on old warships like the Vasa -- he is with the museum in Stockholm.

Also his suit and watch fob are killer and he's sitting in a replica of the Vasa's cabin like a boss with a giant lump on his forehead like just don't care and I have rarely seen anything more thrilling!

I actually didn't see this one as of yet.  Been busy with work stuff and I've been limited mostly to Senda and my new idol, the Night Terrors guy.  I watched his the portion you pointed out and it does make perfect sense. On the other hand, I kept wanting to poke that bulge with a needle.

The yellow scourge that is pine pollen is finally starting to let up a tad here.  That means that prime car washing season is almost here!
I've used Meguiar's car care products forever and am especially fond of their Gold Class wash.  I've heard good things about Griot's. Any of you manly men use Griot's Garage products?

I haven't tried that but I do use Meguiar's because that is what my uncle who is a car guy and runs an auto-parts store recommended.

Really? Now we are going down this road? Fine. Get a clay bar (if you do not already have one.) It really does make a difference before you wax. Also, use it on your windshield followed by a coat of wax and you will not need wipers for a month. Probably the best thing I ever did...

I am big proponent of the clay bar. Makes for a long day. Prelim wash. Clay bar. Main wash. Wax. Buff. Polish.  At least when you are done, you know that you've actually done something.

You clay the windshield too?  Never heard nor even thought of that.  I'm intrigued.

Boltr = Bored Of Lame Tool Reviews

All of the power tool reviewers are paid by tool manufacturers, it's sad. AvE actually tears them apart and looks at how well they are made. Most of the time they don't make it to the the healing bench and end up a part of his mat.

Only busting balls am I but seriously, don’t think I haven’t duly noted and logged this clay bar idea. See one do I in my near future but first a new (or new used) car I want. Suki’s convinced me to go Japanese this time. Get away from American cars now I want to primarily because feel do I that they just don’t really stand behind their product anymore or give a fuck and at least communists the Japanese are not. I am considering Mazda or Toyota. I think I know what side you’ll come down on, Suki but if anyone has any recommendations in this regard please let me know.

One of my coworkers was a gifted mechanic, and he would not only recommend what model and manufacture but what year to avoid. Toyota and Lexus are great.  :D

Thank you for your recommendations. Probably more than I want to spend is Lexus though.

BTW, enjoyed did I your music posted awhile back. The vox were decent and well recorded.

Toyotas were better when they were made in Japan by Toyota. They lost a lot of control when they started outsourcing stuff and building plants in other countries. The early American built Toyotas were still pretty good but not as good as the Japanese built Yotas. People love to talk about how great the 22R and 22RE engines were but i think the 3RZ-FE was better (still made in Japan).

I don't know much about the newer Toyota trucks but they do seem to have more problems. And production of the Tacoma is being moved to Mexico now so quality will probably get worse. Toyota is still the best car company but their quality is slipping. Friend of mine has a newer Camry and it's been trouble free. I tell him he should have the dealer change the tranny fluid but he's to cheap to and don't give a fuck.

All the computer controlled shit is modern cars just creates more problems. Thanks to Greta Thunberg we cant have simple Toyotas you can jump start with AK's anymore.

Mazdaspeed6 (awd) or speed3 if you need something newer (and not AWD.) I say this only because it was what I decided on back when I was looking for a sporty little modified car- and I still like it. Standard, good power, AWD, and easy to disable the traction control in the winter.

*But, hard on gas it is when a freak I drive like.

So you clay the paint- but the glass that you look through and is partially vertical to catch every bug, hunk of dirt and contaminant that you drive through goes untreated? Yeah- wash and clean the window with glass cleaner. Then clay it and wax it. Bugs don't stick, rain beads instead of sheets, and life is better.

*I say this as though I cannot believe that you never thought of it. Truth be told, I only discovered it two summers ago watching a few videos on detailing as I had severe oxidation on my '70 Westfailia... Still cannot get the fiberglass top looking like anything by weathered crap. But all of my windshields sparkle.

Yeah, I mean, who can afford a fucking Lexus, right. I think Asuka's statements are accurate about Toyota's outsourcing failures.

Thanks for the kind words, MT.

A Corolla? What kind of a Master Troll rolls in a Corolla?  What you want, my little green friend, is one of those new electric, Mustang, SUV abominations.

Thank you for reminding me that it is for our "little green friend." That helps in the choice. No Lexus, Toyota, or even Mazda. What he needs is a Dodge Ram... Or any other heavy diesel truck that can be modified to make people's day brighter.

Mazda: Sportier looking and more HP
Toyota: Better mileage and probably more reliable

Still to Corolla I am leaning.

I used to use beard oil on my beard, but I found that coconut oil works better. You have to apply it twice a day and more liberally than beard oil, but I think it's healthier for your hair and skin. It helps me with my eczema flareups, and It's also good for cooking and lubrication. ;)

Huh.

VP Racing "jugs" are the best Gas Can you will ever buy and they empty super fast if you want them too. But they are illegal for use as a fuel can because they do not have the safety crap built into them.

NiCopp line is easy to work with if you have a cheap flare tool. I have tried to flare standard steel brake line with a $40 flare tool and it will just push the line out the back side because it does not clamp well enough. I bought this Eastwood flare tool and it will flare stainless line easy https://www.eastwood.com/professional-brake-tubing-flaring-tool.html

My beam & posts are done.  (see below for a picture)

I will not go into the butcher's bill for the transport to mill & milling costs other than to say I got it done for under $1k.

I have (all Red Oak):

  1x  9.5"x9.5"x147" Center-cut beam (12' 3")
  4x  9.5"x9.5"x127" Posts
  4x  1.5"x9-27"x127" Stock planks
  4x  1.5"x9.5-14""x147" Stock planks
  4x  2.25"x22"x127" Stock planks

I am excited, although I am going to have to wait a couple of years while it dries out in the front room before I can use any of it.  I could probably get away with using the posts and beam right away, as they are going to take about 10 years to fully season, and they can do that in place as they aren't going to twist and warp that much anyway...

Right now, I have to "stick and stack" everything in a neat little pile and make sure the base is completely level (unless I want a bunch of warped boards) and let it air dry for a few years.  I'm putting the beams on top of it all for weight.

Hear, a vidya:

https://youtu.be/hTSTwdOTwJY

I elected for finished cuts only on the beam & posts that I needed.  The stock I can mill myself on my sweet tablesaw in the basement, although I might have to take the extra post back to the mill and have them cut some 0.75-0.5" planks from them for some bookshelves, I don't think my table saw can make 9+" cuts.

This is the tablesaw I have:

That's a marble-top, it is pretty sweet, but heavy as fuck.  I will have to figure out how to get that boardstock into the basement as I don't think I can maneuver 12' down the switch-back stairs.  I imagine it will have to come in through a window or something...

I think all of this gives me a good excuse to buy a planer:
& radial-arm saw:

Or perhaps not, I could probably mill out the 2" stock into some nice Red Oak flooring that I could use in some spots.  Like where the crack-head previous owner used a belt sander on the 2nd floor landing and went across the grain instead of with it, and it looks like he left it sitting in one spot in some places 'cuz there are some wierd "dips" in among the awful gouges he left.  What a dumbass.

I have a router I could use for the edge joins on that, although I'd have to get the bits and actually build the router-table for it.  Something like this:

https://youtu.be/LGPFtzYTDys

My brother built one like that when he borrowed my router, but instead of giving me the table when he returned the router, he just bought a router for himself and gave me mine back.  But he bought a shittier version of the router, mine is variable speed:  his ain't.

Anyway, look below for the sexy picture (there is a dude standing in the background to give you a sense of scale, these things are YUGE.)

Nice tits, dude!

I spent the day shimming and shamming.  Actually, I only spent the last hour or so shimming.  In between shamming, I used all sorts of manly power-tools:  12" abrasion cut-off wheel attached to my compound miter-saw, a gnarly old ???hp metal-grinder/brush wheel thing with no safety guards, a hand-held jigsaw, a table-top scroll saw, a table saw with a scary-as-fuck 7-in Adjustable Dado Blade, a finish blade attached to my compound miter-saw and probably some other shit I forget.

Forgive the Falkie-esque squalor pictured above, I have had a mad scramble this past week or so trying to figure out where to stick and stack this green lumber for the next two years or so.  I have elected for most of the front room and part of the dining room.  Hanz II approves, as you can see.

The shimming was under those 4"x4"x4" dado'd blocks that are holding up the 44" long 1" pipes I had to cut up, that took most of the morning due to using the abrasion cut-off wheel.

I bought an abrasion wheel that was 1/4" thick, since I was mounting it on my compound miter saw, which is not really designed for the cutting of metal;  but it works in a pinch.  Due to the varying types of steel that the pipes I was using were made of,  some of the cuts went like a hot knife through butter while others took a bit longer.  They were old chain-link fence rails I have accumulated for my eventual geodesic greenhouse project;  that I cut them into 44" sections is no big deal as none of the triangles for the greenhouse will have sides anywhere near that.

As an added bonus:  I found all the bent sections and eliminated them from that future equation, so there is that little langiappe or petit cadeau... how exquisitely droll!

I digress;  my next step was to begin dado-ing the 4"x4"'s so that the 1" pipe sections would fit snugly into them without rolling off while stacking the two tons of Red Oak stock and beams on them.  That was just a bit scarier than the mis-use of the compound miter as a metal saw;  I decided since it was rough work I would break out the old trusty Craftsman 7" Adjustable Dado Blade:

https://youtu.be/HqqIOnk8gWs

That is where the scroll-saw came in:  I needed to fabricate a custom throat-plate for the table-saw that was wide enough for that gnarly thing...  YIKES!  I quickly found out that I would have to cut the 8'x4"x4" posts down as my improvised extensions weren't doing the job, and were frankly a bit dangerous.  I had to switch out the abrasion cut-off metal cut-off wheel for the finish blade on the miter-saw (the hours lost yesterday trying to find the arbor wrenches for both the table saw and miter-saw I will not go into, other than to say that I eventually remembered that I had stuck them in with the router when I loaned it to my brother years ago as I couldn't be bothered to check which of the wrenches went the router,) I digress...  a thing which would be necessary to cut the 8' into 4" sections pictured above.

For mystical wood-working reasons that we are both well aware of, I of course did the dado-work before I broke out the grinding wheel/wire brush bench grinder to put finish on the razor-sharp rough-cut ends of those 1" steel pipes:  I wouldn't want Hanz II, Flipper or Mongo to cut a paw accidentally while frolicking around the slowly drying lumber.

Speaking of the router, I could probably have more safely dado'd the 4"x4"'s with that, only I haven't built a table for it yet, nor do I have a router-bit (that I know of) capable of the job.  I think in the spirit of week-old fresh-cut green-wood expediency this method worked out better on the risk/reward & thyme/money fronts;  I do still have all my fingers and toes after all.

After "chunking" out the 4"x4"'s into nice little ~4" cubes, I next had to cut the shims (after much shamming);  for this I used the miter-saw and fabricated a temporary butt-stop so that I could knock out 1/8",1/4" & 1/2" shims.  I think I made about two dozen of each;  which if you do the math comes out to half a grosse of shims!  Wunderbar!

It has been a long day:  I think I made my first cut at about 730 (after shamming with coffee and plants in the backyard for an hour or so) and finished the shims around 2030 or so.  At which point I cracked my well-earned Pilsner Urquell, and began shimming the base.

Now THAT was probably a mistake!  Due to multiple factors (one-hundred plus year-old house settling, lack of a twelve-foot straight edge {~four foot was the best I could muster on that front} and a dumb box of hammers) this "leveling" of the base would probably have best been done sober and on a full stomach (my pot-roast dinner gently simmers in the oven as I type).

I am confident that I got everything into ±1/16" of true;  perhaps not strictly "level," but from end-to-end I do not think I will end up with wavy-bacon Red Oak beams, posts and stock after the requisite two years of waiting for it to dry.

I think I may turn some of the board-stock into flooring as I think the house is mostly Red Oak in the first place, although someone at some point made the unfortunate decision to put dark stain on the trim (where they didn't slather crappy latex paint on it).  Or perhaps I could redo some of the baseboard trim in places where it was ignominiously butchered for reasons only known to meth- and/or crack-heads.

Crown molding?  Maybe split the kitchen-door into one of those cool split-level things:

THat wood be pretty cool for the eventual restaurant!  Hmm.

Have I typed too much?  (Axing for a fiend)

Nautical Shore.

ediot:  I completely forgot to mention that all of today's shimming and shamming was in preparation for tomorrow's crack-of-dawn mission to bring all that lumber:

To the front-room drying-rack I just built today...  Sheesh, more than a week since it was cut!  I hope it hasn't dried out too much in all this Midwest heat, oh well:  It will be what it will be.
