It's the usual witches brew you people love to get excited about. Half-truths mixed with lies to produce some fantastic concoction that gets people so flustered they don't bother to check their sources. It's about as reliable as stories of the imposter Jesus Christ.
What gets me about people like you is that you really get off on the thought of mass social breakdown. The thrill you get out of all this is so intense that you'll never entertain the thought you might be wrong. You'd be quite disappointed in fact that all this cataclysmic fuckery wasn't going to happen.

They are an hour and a ferry away but, though I have three siblings, I am by far the closest and it is my job to keep all the holidays and see them once a week, which we stretched to every two weeks when it was bad. Any longer would have been cruel.

It must be difficult to get the right balance when it comes to older people. My parents died over a decade ago but I have been thinking of what a nightmare it would have been because they both had a history of lung trouble and they would have been right in the middle of the riskiest groups.

I do not quite have that just-so sense you find among Germans who are happy to pass off the basest aphorism with the most punchable look of complacency but I love the pure power he packs into his own constraints as a mark of discipline.

Funny. My mother has decided to take a "wait and see" approach. I still see her regular, and she still socializes (illegally) with a number of people. She is more social than me (both of us try to be somewhat careful- but both of us continue to work- so you really cannot limit risk that much.) She has chose to skip the fear part of this pandemic.*
*I, of course, am still huddled afraid and crying in my basement aside from when I visit my mother...

There are three people I may use that line on...
Fact is that while I don't believe the complete doomsday (we are all going to die) predictions of the vaccine, I also refused to wholesale swallow the doomsday (we are all going to die) predictions of Covid. I think everybody should decide for themselves and weigh their risks and comfort. If I were 85 in a nursing home, I would probably be first in line (actually, if I were in a nursing home, I may abstain in the hopes of contracting Covid and kicking off- but that should be a choice left to the individual.)
As it stands, I know a few people who may chose to end their relationship to me if I refuse to be vaccinated. I laugh, and will "sacrifice" those relationships. I would also say around 50% of the people I know want to be first in line the day that they are eligible for vaccines. But these are probably the same people who get the flu shot each year (not judging- I just don't bother.)
I'm honestly one of the people who hopes that I had covid (I took a day off last February, before it was a know thing. For me that is very rare. I was also in a very high risk environment with lots of exposure to individuals traveling.) Or that I get it (and preferably not spread it.)
*On a side note, this conversation reminded me that I should call my employee with Covid to show interest in how he is doing...

*On a side note, the employee is doing well. Told me that he has decreased energy and has had the regular flu worse in the past. His wife (who he got it from through her workplace), is apparently asymptomatic. So, good news all around (provided that his "close contacts" come back with negative tests.)

My folks decided to take it seriously after my cousin had a party last summer (to which we didn't go, it was all the rural trumpkins of course) where half the people got it. No worse than the flu but it was pretty sobering to learn how contagious it was from people you know who aren't the kind of people who squawk about things like that generally.
That said, I am happy to report that my folks' neighbor with the Don't Tread On Me flag was flying it proudly last time I was over but now he has an American flag instead of the Trump one. The spirit is still alive!

I do think that she may be overestimating the risk of a vaccine while underestimating the risk of covid due to present good health. To the point where I was wondering if she should see a doctor (not something I usually see with her.) She forgot about it, but does keep a journal and looked back to find that yes- there was a week of hell just before Covid was officially announced as being in the country.
Anyhow, it's good to see you here as well. The small core of posters on this board are (most) of the ones who I most enjoyed on BG. I see Camaztoz is on ellgab, and of course MD is missing (I'm sure there are others.) But I always enjoy our interactions.*

It's no wonder people come down with it between the first and second doses.

I do not know if my accordion is suitably martial but I have high hopes that it will resonate with the culture of the street and lift everyone's spirits.
I do understand people's reluctance, they make you sign all those waivers for a reason. I'm glad your folks got their shot. I'm going to guess that the very real psychological harm of anxiety and angst (for those predisposed to such things) likely outweighs any risks. I know a few people who are diabetic (young) who believe they will drop dead if the get it. and who should probably get a shot as soon as possible. I also know some bipedal whales who should probably be more concerned than they are. But watching the psychological toll it is taking on people is the most interesting part of it.

They will be fine. You would notice if something were wrong. I hear it is obvious when their hair falls out, their jaws fall off, and they start chanting "Brains!" (Or the closest that one can utter that word when missing their mandible I hear that is the most common side effect.

The whole stanza has an English-weather theme with its rain and wind, within the overall conceit of armed combat ("sword", "shield") where the "plumage" would refer both to a literal plume or crest on the helmet, and to my manner of dress and toilet which you mock relentlessly and which I defiantly maintain. There is the gratuitous use of "gay", also a double meaning, though playfully vapid.
I would rather draw your attention to the "urn" in the final stanza which here signifies both mortality and aesthetics, after Keats, an allusion I expected you to grasp immediately. It is a figure of which I am very proud.
