A keeper

Song Review by Ned Raggett  [-]

One of the more obscure songs from Alice in Chains, "Don't Follow" is also one of the best, a very low key number from Jar of Flies that finds the band at its most calm, reflective, and gently warning. Jerry Cantrell's acoustic guitar is simply wonderful, a soft, involving melody that has all the rich feeling of a classic rock landmark without any of the run-into-the-ground feeling that so many of those older songs have now. The addition of harmonica adds a further lost and forlorn feeling to the song, while the absence of the rhythm section from the first half of the song further intensifies the close, tender atmosphere. Layne Staley and Cantrell harmonize at points, in their own distinct, weirdly attractive way, but it's Cantrell who gets the lion's share of vocals. It's some of his best work ever, delivering a message about not taking a particular path with gentle grace, spiked with a slightly louder central section about wanting to find a way home beyond his reach.

Anthony Payne is of course a guy who completed Elgar's Third (wonderfully, IMO) we will be hearing harmoniemusik versions of the First in due course.

I said, ROCK!  Not satanic grunge.  That being said, these girls are exceptionally talented musicians.  This group is tight!  (That's a compliment in case you didn't know).  BTW, how cool it is that the lead singer is wearing a Metallica T-Shirt. ;D

The drummer and lead guitar Kick ASS!
